Each origin carries its own currency regime, its own settlement path and its own position on the Commission import lists. Treating them as one market is the mistake that stops a consignment at the border
A corridor caught mid recovery
Spanish exports to Algeria were frozen out for two and a half years by a suspension of bank domiciliations. The freeze lifted in November 2024 and the flow came back almost threefold in a single year, still short of where it stood before

Where the demand actually sits
Spanish halal demand is concentrated, not spread evenly. Catalonia alone accounts for more than a quarter of it, which is why the corridor lands in Barcelona rather than anywhere else
What may lawfully move
A halal certificate answers one question. Whether the European Union admits that category from that country answers another, and importers regularly discover the second answer at the border. Choose an origin and a category to see both

The corridor runs both ways
Spanish producers have demand waiting in Algeria and Morocco, and the same certification problem in reverse. Most Spanish food exporters do not know what halal certification requires of them
The line stood at EUR 8 million in 2021. By 2025 that single product line exceeded the whole of Spanish exports to Algeria recorded for 2023, which shows how fast a category moves once the channel opens
Spain to MENA, from year two
Spain already supplies around 37% of Morocco's imports from the European Union. The infrastructure is in place and the digital channel is not, and the certification requirement runs in the opposite direction
